Computer-Based Models of tDCS and tACS

چکیده
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) are noninvasive neuromodulatory techniques that deliver low-intensity currents facilitating or inhibiting spontaneous neuronal activity. These techniques have a number of advantages that have been applied in clinical settings; in particular, tDCS/tACS dose in principle is easily customized by varying electrode number, position, size, shape, and current. However, the ability to leverage this customization depends on how tDCS/tACS dose modulate the underling brain current fl ow. This relationship is not simple and can benefi t from the use of computational models of current fl ow, personalized to individual subjects and cases. Tools for modeling range from Finite Element Method models to stand-alone GUI based software for clinicians. Many software packages can load individual’s MRI scans, allowing individualized therapy design. However, the challenge remains to design and interpret these models while remaining aware of their limitations. Current fl ow models alone cannot “make dose decisions,” but rather inform the rational design of electrotherapy. This is evidenced in exemplary studies combining computer modeling and clinical data, several examples of which are outlined in this chapter. Though modeling software is now widely available, newer generations of algorithms promise more precision and fl exibility, and thus it is predicted that with increased validation, dissemination, simplifi cation and dissemination of modeling tools, computational forward models of neuromodulation will become useful tools to guide the optimization of clinical electrotherapy. Essential for this adoption and refi nement is an appreciation by clinicians of the uses and limitations of computational models, and conversely understanding by engineers and programmers of what software functions are relevant to clinical practice. متن کاملBeta Band Transcranial Alternating (tACS) and Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Applied After Initial Learning Facilitate Retrieval of a Motor Sequence
The primary motor cortex (M1) contributes to the acquisition and early consolidation of a motor sequence. Although the relevance of M1 excitability for motor learning has been supported, the significance of M1 oscillations remains an open issue. This study aims at investigating to what extent retrieval of a newly learned motor sequence can be differentially affected by motor-cortical transcrani...
متن کاملTranscranial Alternating Current and Random Noise Stimulation: Possible Mechanisms
Background. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a relatively recent method suited to noninvasively modulate brain oscillations. Technically the method is similar but not identical to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). While decades of research in animals and humans has revealed the main physiological mechanisms of tDCS, less is known about the physiological mecha...

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been applied in numerous scientific studies over the past decade. However, the possibility to apply tDCS in therapy of neuropsychiatric disorders is still debated. While transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been approved for treatment of major depression in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), tDCS is not as widel...

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been widely investigated for its potential to enhance cognition, and in particular working memory, however to date standard approaches to stimulation have shown only modest effects. Alternative, more specialised, forms of current delivery may be better suited to cognitive enhancement. One such method is transcranial Alternating Current Stimulat...
